CCTV Drain Surveys Explained: What Can a Drain Camera Detect?

A drain survey with the help of CCTV sends a waterproof camera through your pipes to find blockages, cracks, and collapses. It gives you clear footage, so you know exactly what’s wrong underground.

“Did you know? According to Water UK, each year, there are over 300,000 sewer blockages nationwide.”

That’s exactly why a CCTV drain survey matters so much. It catches problems while they’re still affordable to fix, rather than after they’ve turned into a flooded garden or a collapsed pipe. At Precise Drainage, we see this pattern all the time. A single crack ignored for a year becomes a full excavation job later. So, what does the camera actually pick up down there? Let’s get into it.

Key Takeaways

  • A CCTV drain survey reveals blockages, cracks, and root damage clearly, with no guesswork involved at all.
  • Regular drain inspections catch small problems early, saving thousands compared to emergency pipe repairs later on.
  • Survey costs typically range from £100 to £600, depending on property size and how accessible drains are.
  • Book a CCTV drain survey before buying a house to avoid hidden, costly drainage faults after moving in.
  • Slow drains, bad smells, and gurgling sounds are signs it’s time for a professional camera inspection.

Getting to Know CCTV Surveys for Drains

What is a CCTV drain survey? It’s a visual inspection, nothing more complicated than that. A technician feeds a flexible rod with a small camera on the end into your drainpipe. The camera streams live footage straight back to a monitor. An engineer then watches every metre of pipe, in real time, as it happens.

This method is one of the most trusted CCTV surveys for drains you’ll find anywhere. It swaps out old-fashioned guesswork for hard evidence you can actually see.

What Can a Drain Camera Actually Spot?

Modern drain cameras pick up more than most people expect. They reveal issues that are simply impossible to see from ground level. Here’s a rundown of what a typical inspection turns up:

  • Blockages: Fat, wipes, roots, or general debris jammed in the line
  • Cracks and fractures: Early warning signs of structural weakness
  • Root intrusion: Tree roots forcing their way through joints
  • Pipe collapse: Sections that have caved in, partly or fully
  • Misaligned joints: Pipework that’s shifted out of place over time
  • Corrosion: Worn or degraded material, common in older systems
  • Standing water: Often a sign of poor gradient or a hidden blockage
  • Illegal connections: Pipework wrongly tied into the main sewer

Each of these problems looks a little different on screen. A seasoned engineer can usually tell a minor crack apart from a genuine structural risk within seconds of watching the footage.

Signs You Might Need a Drain Camera Inspection

A few warning signs point straight to trouble underground. Keep an eye out for:

  • Slow-draining sinks or toilets
  • Gurgling sounds coming from the pipes
  • Bad smells near drains, inside or outside the property
  • Damp patches on walls close to underground pipework
  • Blockages that keep coming back despite regular clearing

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s worth getting an inspection sooner rather than later.

How CCTV Surveys for Drains Actually Work

The process is a lot simpler than most people assume. Here’s the short version:

Step

What Happens

1. Access point

Engineer locates a manhole or drain access point

2. Camera insertion

A push-rod camera is fed into the pipe

3. Live footage

Real-time video streams to a screen on-site

4. Inspection

Engineer checks for cracks, blockages, and damage

5. Report

You receive footage plus a written summary

The whole thing usually takes somewhere between 30 minutes and two hours. It really just depends on the pipe run and how many access points there are.

When You Actually Need a CCTV Drain Service

Not every property needs a survey straight away. But a CCTV drain service becomes genuinely essential in a few situations:

  • Buying a property : Check for hidden drainage faults before you commit to anything
  • Recurring blockages: Find the actual cause instead of just treating the symptoms
  • Insurance claims: Band over clear evidence for subsidence or flood damage
  • New building work: Confirm the existing drains can handle the extra load
  • Selling a house: Reassure buyers with a clean, documented drainage report

Pro Tip: Book your survey before symptoms get worse, not after. Early inspection often costs a small fraction of what emergency repair work runs to. We’ve had customers save thousands just by catching a cracked pipe six months before it would have collapsed entirely.

Common Mistakes People Make With Drain Problems

Plenty of homeowners reach for a quick fix first, and it often backfires on them:

  • Pouring chemical drain cleaners down repeatedly, which can corrode older pipes
  • Ignoring slow drainage because it seems too minor to worry about
  • Assuming a plunger will sort out any drain issue
  • Skipping a survey before major landscaping or extension work

Get a Clear Look at Your Drains!

Don’t wait for a burst pipe to force your hand. A CCTV drain survey gives you clarity, fast, and it could genuinely save you thousands in emergency repairs down the line. Book a survey with Precise Drainage and book an inspection today.

Our blocked shower drainpipe was rapidly & professionally cleared as soon as the operative arrived. Everything was great & I can’t fault the end result - the only point I’d make is that it was relatively expensive.

Jamie did fix the issue of limescale in my sewage pipe but then went on to block my sink by putting the drilled pieces of limescale down the plugholes of my sink and bath. When I informed the company they accused me of lying and refused to reimburse me or to apologise. ( I sent pictures of the drilled pieces of limescale that came up from my blocked sink when i plunged it). They charged me £840 and now I will have to get another company to flush out my pipes. Terrible customer service which has left my feeling very distressed and upset.
