What Is Drain Relining A Complete Guide to Repairing Pipes Without Digging

Historically the repair of drains has involved digging up gardens, driveways or paved areas to get to damaged pipes. But today, trenchless technology can fix most drainage problems. This repairs the pipework from the inside, causing less disruption and leaving surfaces untouched.

“Did You Know? Ofwat said that timely maintenance and repairs are important for protecting private drainage systems, as homeowners are generally responsible for drains that serve only their property.”

At Precise Drainage Solutions, we help homeowners and businesses to restore damaged drainage systems with modern drainpipe relining services. Knowing how drain relining works will assist you in deciding whether this innovative repair technique is the right solution for your property.

Key Takeaways

  • Relining is a no-dig method of repairing damaged pipes.
  • It can restore pipe strength with minimal disruption to your property.
  • CCTV inspections assist in determining the suitability of relining as a solution.
  • Relining is often quicker than traditional pipe replacement.
  • The professional assessment chooses the most appropriate repair method.

What Exactly Is Drain Relining?

Drain relining is a trenchless repair method that restores the inside of an existing pipe without the need to remove or replace the entire drainage system.

The damaged pipe is lined with a specially designed resin-coated liner that is inserted in the pipe and positioned over the affected section. Once cured, it forms a tough new lining within the existing pipe, which helps restore structural integrity while allowing water to flow normally.

Relining is often a practical alternative to excavation, especially where access is limited or surface disruption needs to be minimised

What Exactly Is Drain Relining

When Is Drain Relining a Suitable Option?

There are many types of drainage problems that don’t require a full pipe replacement. Drainage specialists will normally perform a CCTV survey of the pipework to check the condition and ensure that the damage is suitable for repair by relining before recommending it.

Drain relining is usually done when pipes have:

How Does the Process Work?

Many property owners ask, how do you reline a drain?

Although the exact process varies depending on the condition of the drainage system, the procedure generally follows these steps:

  1. Inspect the pipe using CCTV equipment.
  2. Clean the drain thoroughly.
  3. Insert the resin-impregnated liner.
  4. Position the liner within the damaged section.
  5. Allow the liner to cure and harden.
  6. Carry out a final inspection to confirm successful installation.

What Are the Advantages of Relining Instead of Digging?

In some cases, old-fashioned digging may be the only option, but for most homeowners and businesses, relining can solve several problems. Keeping the original landscaping and existing surfaces is clearly the biggest advantage of trenchless methods for repair and renewal.

These include:

  • Less disruption to gardens and driveways
  • Faster project completion
  • Reduced excavation
  • Improved structural integrity
  • Lower impact on everyday property use

How Long Does a Relined Pipe Last?

One of the most common questions property owners ask is how long to reline drain pipes.

Life of the pipe depends on the condition of the original pipe, quality of the installation and ongoing maintenance. Relined pipes are designed for reliable long-term service when installed correctly and used under normal operating conditions.

Routine inspections and responsible use of the drain can also help maximise the lifespan of the repaired system.

What Factors Affect the Cost?

Another frequently asked question is how much drain relining costs. Because each drainage system is unique, professional inspections are usually required before an accurate quote can be provided.

The total cost can vary depending on:

  • Pipe diameter
  • Length of the damaged section
  • Accessibility
  • Extent of structural d

Is Relining Always Better Than Pipe Replacement?

Not necessarily. Relining is a reliable solution for many structural defects, but severely collapsed pipes or large structural failures may still require excavation and replacement.

The best way to repair the problem will depend on the findings of a professional drainage inspection rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

So, proper diagnosis is still a critical part of any drainage repair project.

Call our experts for an honest assessment of your drainage system.

Is Drain Relining Worth the Investment?

Many homeowners eventually ask, how much does it cost to reline a drain, but focusing solely on price can overlook the broader value of the solution.

Where relining is suitable, it can minimise excavation, disruption and repair times and preserve existing landscaping or hard surfaces. It is often an attractive option for repairing damaged drainage systems while avoiding unnecessary disturbance, among other practical benefits.

Costing up repair methods is not enough. It is important to look at the overall condition of the drainage system and the best long-term solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Drain relining is suitable for many structural defects, but severely collapsed or extensively damaged pipes may still require excavation and replacement.

In most cases, relining significantly reduces the need for excavation because repairs are carried out from within the existing pipework.

Drainage specialists typically perform CCTV inspections to assess pipe condition and determine whether relining is the most appropriate repair method.

The liner occupies only a small amount of internal space, allowing the drainage system to continue operating efficiently after installation.

When professionally installed and appropriate for the condition of the pipe, relining is designed to provide a durable long-term repair solution.

Our blocked shower drainpipe was rapidly & professionally cleared as soon as the operative arrived. Everything was great & I can’t fault the end result - the only point I’d make is that it was relatively expensive.

Jamie did fix the issue of limescale in my sewage pipe but then went on to block my sink by putting the drilled pieces of limescale down the plugholes of my sink and bath. When I informed the company they accused me of lying and refused to reimburse me or to apologise. ( I sent pictures of the drilled pieces of limescale that came up from my blocked sink when i plunged it). They charged me £840 and now I will have to get another company to flush out my pipes. Terrible customer service which has left my feeling very distressed and upset.
